Ferret Facts

  • Ferrets are from the mink and weasel family.
  • Ferrets live from 7-10 years on average, sometimes longer!
  • Ferrets have weak vision, but their sense of smell and hearing are strong.
  • Ferrets are the third most popular pet in the U.S.
  • Ferrets sleep an average of 18-20 hours a day.
  • Stealing and hiding objects is part of their natural nesting instinct. (Their Greek name means "little thief".)
  • Ferrets are illegal in California Hawaii New York City and Washington DC.
  • Ferrets are obligate carnivores, therefore no  fruits or veggies!
  • Ferrets cannot tolerate sugar, so no cookie or candy treats!
  • Ferrets must have at least 4-5  hours of playtime outside their cage daily.
  • Ferrets often have bad reactions to cedar & pine.
  • Ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years.
  • Ferrets can be litterbox trained…but no clay as it may hurt their bum best to use paper pellet litter.
